In brief

Regulation 17

Beginning at the end of the 19th century, in Ottawa and elsewhere in Ontario, the status of French in separate schools is challenged. Anglophone parents and inspectors pressure the Ontario government to make English the only language of instruction in schools across the province. In 1912, the infamous Regulation 17 prohibits teaching in French beyond Grade 2 of elementary school. Until its abolition in 1927, French-language schools develop on the fringes of the Ontario school system.
